CLASS 3

Handmade Quilt
Because the third year focuses heavily on cooking and gardening we thought it would be fun to naturally dye some fabric with the students incorporating skills from the kitchen and plants to dye with. Thanks to Eva and her wide range of natural dye knowledge, we were able to create a pallete of colors using Indigo, Madder Root, Orange Bark, Eucalyptus, Sappanwood, & Rhubarb. Students helped with the dye process at school. They also measured and cut the dyed fabrics. Another element was to add in some squares that showcase the embroidery stitches they are learning in handwork this year. Some students were grouped to go into the garden and draw a simple flower motif, and were also given the option to transfer their drawing to fabric with embroidery. Some students chose to see the whole process through, some chose to just draw and some chose to just embroider another’s drawing.
The squares were then sewn together, the face, batting, and backing then tied and finished.
We were so touched to see the students collaborating with one another, working in teams to accomplish the tasks, and use positive language in encouraging one another throughout the process.
As many quilts are, this one is filled with hours of detailed work, and a lot of love.
